Liberian’s Passion for Educating His Country’s Youth
During his March 2018 student recruitment trip in West Africa, Dr. Steven Edmond, Dean of the School of Business and Technology (SBT) at Huston-Tillotson University (HT), was offered an opportunity to visit the country of Liberia. Civicus Barsi-Giah, SBT alumni from Liberia, facilitated this visit by informing Mr. Wilson Nyanneh that Dr. Edmond was seeking high achieving students in West Africa to enroll at HT. Mr. Nyanneh is the exclusive West Africa distributor of Tsingtao Beer, which is headquartered in Shandong, China.
Mr. Nyanneh has a passion for educating the youth of Liberia. He invited Dr. Edmond to visit his country to talk to government officials, business leaders, and community leaders about the many educational opportunities that HT has to offer.
Dr. Edmond accepted the all-expense paid invitation from Mr. Nyanneh. When he arrived in Liberia, Dr. Edmond was impressed with the development of the country since his last visit in 2008. Not only did he observe infrastructure improvements but also was briefed by government officials on improvements in areas such as access to universal primary education, promoting gender equality and empowering women. Dr. Edmond had meetings with several of newly-elected President George Weah’s Ministers. President Weah’s administration is advocating “growth through education of the youth.”
The trip to Liberia proved to be very productive for Dr. Edmond. He and Mr. Nyanneh spoke on several local radio stations about the purpose of this trip. Also, they were interviewed by journalists who published their story in local newspapers. The basic theme throughout was, “HT wants to help educate the youth of Liberia.”
It appears that, because of Mr. Nyanneh’s passion and determination for educating Liberia’s youth, 2-3 Liberians are poised to attend HT in the Fall of 2018. Dr. Edmond plans to build on this partnership with Mr. Nyanneh and help bring Liberian students to HT every year.
